Many of these high resolution images are engravings from the personal collection of Sir John Herschel (1792-1871), which was sold at a Sotheby auction, 3-4 March 1958. Undeniably, because of this source, there is a pro-British bias to the selection of great names. And because of the time period in which they were collected, there is little diversity in the people represented, despite the fact that his aunt Caroline Herschel (1750-1848) was a distinguished astronomer.
